You sit down for a test. You read the question, and it feels familiar. You know you studied it, but the answer… just isn’t there.
Memory is not storage. It’s a process. Many people have a misconception and think memory is like a storage system, where information is saved and stays there forever. For example, when you study, it feels like we are simply “putting information into” our brains. In reality, memory is an active process that the brain has to keep maintaining. To remember something requires your brain to take in the information, organize it, and be able to successfully access it later.
You may have heard of active vs. passive learning. Even simply recalling a simple fact means your brain is actively rebuilding that memory in the moment. Because memory depends on multiple steps working correctly, it’s also very easy for things to go wrong. This is why forgetting is not random, and is not a sign you didn’t try hard enough.
Now let's dive into why memory depends on the brain working together, not all the magic happening in one spot. Let’s introduce 2 brain regions you may have heard before. The hippocampus helps make and organize new memories. The prefrontal cortex helps to retrieve and use those memories. To understand why our memory fails sometimes, it helps us to look at what your brain is doing behind those scenes.
When you learn something new, the hippocampus plays a big role in helping to make that memory. It helps organize that information and connect those new ideas to things you already know. Chronic stress unfortunately weakens the hippocampus by releasing cortisol, which acts as neurotoxins to your hippocampal neurons.
Later, when you try to remember that information, the prefrontal cortex helps you retrieve it and use it in the moment. Memory only works effectively when these regions communicate well together, rather than when they try operating on their own. If the communication between these brain regions weakens, or never is able to fully form in the first place, accessing memory becomes much, much harder.
Now, let's cover 3 reasons as to why forgetting is logical, not personal. The first one is that the memory was never fully formed. Sometimes the issue isn’t that you forgot, it’s that the memory did not stick in the first place. The second reason is that the brain prunes unused connections. Your brain actually actively deletes weak pathways to stay efficient! Reason 3 is that stress and pressure block retrieval. The memory might be there, but you can’t access it.
In other words, forgetting is not simply about losing the information, it’s mainly about losing access to it.
